Pre-Algebra Description

Just as the name suggests, Pre-Algebra prepares students for Algebra. This 1-2 year course builds upon mastery of basic arithmetic: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing using whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and decimals. We review basic arithmetic as needed while moving steadily through the Pre-Algebra textbook. Basic skills expand to include using both positive and negative numbers while simplifying algebraic expressions and solving simple algebraic equations.

Acquiring new math vocabulary is a very important part of the Pre-Algebra curriculum. We begin the year with a study of integers and algebraic expressions, and quickly begin learning to solve equations and inequalities. Students learn to carefully organize their written work on paper, showing each step of a solution. From solving one-step equations with integers, we move to equations with decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers, reviewing basic skills to support success. Every component of the math we do this year is infused with algebraic notation. We write and solve problems using ratios and proportions and use cross-products while solving equations. Later in the year, we begin writing and solving two-step equations and inequalities. Geometry includes review of Area, Perimeter, and Volume formulas as well as a few simple constructions exploring the relationships between circles and triangles. The Pythagorean Theorem is introduced. Exploring linear functions and graphing are spring topics which bring the year to a close.

My goal is for every student to learn more, to get better at math, and to build confidence at every level of proficiency. Students move on to either study Algebra as eighth graders or to continue developing Algebra readiness for one more year before entering high school.
