Overview

Brook Haven offers three levels of 8th grade math. Placement depends on several variables, including performance on standardized math tests as well as teacher recommendations.

We offer one section of Algebra A, two sections of Algebra B, and two sections of Pre-Algebra. Algebra A is a fast paced Algebra class. It is designed for above average students who are highly motivated to succeed in a math class that is taught at an accelerated pace. Students who complete Algebra A are eligible to take the Algebra challenge test in early June. If they score high enough on the Algebra challenge test, they can move into Geometry as freshmen at Analy. Again, Algebra A is best suited for students who have math confidence and a natural aptitude for math.

Algebra B offers 8th graders an introduction to Algebra. The instructional goal, however, is not to complete the full Algebra 1 course that is taught at the high school level. The class moves at a slower, more deliberate pace and is suitable for strong math students who are building their Algebra skills and their math confidence. Algebra B students typically move into Algebra 1 at the high school level and are able to complete four years of high school math, if desired.

Pre-Algebra allows students who are not ready to tackle Algebra fundamentals to improve their basic math skills. Pre-Algebra gives students the core skills to move to either a one year or two year sequence of Algebra 1 when they move into high school. They might then follow with two, three, or four years of high school math, depending on their performance and career plans.

As we place students in Algebra A and B classes, it is useful to get input from students and their parents. We are particularly interested in discovering how much students want to be challenged and what they believe their math confidence to be.

Homework

There are daily assignments, with few exceptions. There is generally time in class to work on the assignments. Assignments not completed in class are homework. An assignment is typically due the next school day after it is assigned. Excused absences will have 5 school days to make up the work. Unexcused late homework assignments are not accepted.
